Samuel Brown was a freed slave who joined the Union Army during the Civil War. He joined the day before General Lee surrendered and served briefly with the 137th Colored Infantry Regiment. He came to California in 1913 where several of his children lived. When he died in 1923, he was recognized as a Civil War Veteran and a member of the G.A.R., an organization of former Union Army Vets. His pension records and other documents show that he served in the Union Army. Even though his service in the Union Army is documented, he was buried with a headstone indicating he was in the Confederate Army. The error was discovered in November 2009 by a cemetery employee and he brought it to the attention of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. The group then researched Samuel's service record and began the process of correcting the mistake. The Department Of Veterans Affairs provided a corrected headstone and a dedication was provided by members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in period correct uniforms and dresses. The dedication was similar to what would have been done after the War. The old and the new headstone are shown.
