** TWO WOMEN BY THE NAME OF KATE BOGART LIVED IN FERNANDINA AT THE SAME TIME. IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO CONFUSE THE TWO WOMEN. Kate Bogart Wass (1905-2005) and Kate Bogart Mahoney (1889-1912) It is very interesting to read about both of these women.

KATE BOGART MAHONEY. Kate was born in Granville Nova Scotia. Her parents were Capt. William Durand Bogart and Ida Miller Bogart. Her father was a Sea Captain and she was their only child. The family immigrated to Fernandina when her father became the owner of a Shipping Company.. Kate and her mother Ida spent a great deal of time traveling aboard ships with her father as the Captain. They often visited relatives in New York, Boston and Canada.
In Fernandina the family lived on 9th street, 4th street and then built a large impressive home on Centre Street. (the house no longer stands) Kate married Haynes Richardson Mahoney. He was born in Fernandina. They married April 3, 1912 in St. Peter's Church.
In October of that same year 1912 Kate was visiting New York City. It is not known if Haynes was with her. We assume she was visiting relatives and possibly the couple was returning from a long honeymoon (that is only speculation) While in New York staying with her wealthy Uncle she contracted Typhoid Fever and died. (This was at the same time when Typhoid Mary was working as a cook for wealthy families in New York. There might be a connection or there might not be a connection)
Kate's body was carefully returned to Fernandina. Special conditions applied to shipping a body with typhoid. Kate was buried in St. Peter's Cemetery. It is not know if her parents or her husband's family purchased the beautiful angel statue that overlooks her grave. This statue often called "Mahoney's Angel" has become a beautiful landmark in Fernandina.
Kate's parents remained in Fernandina until 1940 when Capt. Bogart Died. He is buried beside Kate. Kate's mother Ida Bogart returned in 1940 to Canada. She lived to be 99. She was buried in Canada. There is no record that has been found to indicate that later in time her body was returned to Fernandina. It is believed that her mother's grave beside Kate is only a memorial stone. (Needs more research)
Kate's husband moved from Fernandina to Jacksonville Florida. Years later he married and had several children. He is buried in Jacksonville with his second wife. His parents are buried beside Kate. If anyone has any additional information on this beautiful woman or the angel statue please share.
