Pierre Kiwanis Club, Pierre, South Dakota

RESOLUTION
It is with extreme regret that the members of the Pierre Kiwanis Club learned that our esteemed friend, Hi Lawrence, had passed away. There remains here in the minds and memory of many the knowledge of the worth and value of this modest, kind and gentle soul who activated, inspired and organized in Pierre and in central South Dakota many worthwhile and continuing projects which contribute to the public welfare far beyond his life span. Hi was the inspiration for the organization of the Pierre Kiwanis Club in 1921, which had in its membership the outstanding citizens on both sides of the tracks, who had, prior to that time, been split by trivial differences. The Club prospered and the city became united. Hi was one of he early Presidents of the Pierre Kiwanis Club.
Hi organized and promoted the Pierre Country Club, a going institution, which, has from a small beginning in the early '20s, grown to a membership of over 400 and will last as long as the Capital City.
At a time when most of the members of the Congregational Church were broke and money seemed impossible to get, Hi organized the membership and assisted the Trustees to build a modern church building at the time of low prices. The structure was completed largely through his efforts and will remain an institution of great spiritual service for another century.
With knowledge of the value of thoroughbred horses, Hi proceeded to secure the loan form the U. S. Government of thoroughbred remount stallions into central South Dakota for the purpose of breeding horses suitable for the U. S. Cavalry, which was the result of developing a strain of horses widely known and used by polo players. Polo championships are still being won by the Pierre Polo Team throughout the entire United States.
This Resolution was presented and read to the pierre Kiwanis Club at its regular meeting and ordered and adopted to be made a part of the record of the organization and a copy be sent to the widow, daughter and son of the deceased, Hiram Lawrence, 3rd President of the Pierre Kiwanis Club.
