His parents were Claudia Chapel Richardson and Randolph Millard Dorrance. Their three children were born in Jefferson City: Ward Allison, born on April 30, 1904; Mildred Eloise, born on August 25, 1906; and Jack Courtney, born on April 30, 1909.
Mildred and Jack were devoted to each other, their mother, and their Richardson grandparents.
Jack spent most of his working years in West Virginia. He first sold supplies from town to town for Rice-Stix Dry Goods, Company, 10th and Washington Streets, St. Louis, Missouri. They lived in Huntington and Charleston. Jack was always a friendly and talkative person and made a good living for them.
During World War II, Jack served in Italy and Northern Africa in the U. S. Army. Among his decorations and awards, he received a Bronze Star Medal.
After fifty-five years of marriage Dulcie died. Jack said they had had a wonderful life together. Until Jack died at age 91, he continued to take daily walks, drive his car, and write entertaining letters.
