J. J. Cleveland
Prominent Citizen
Died Sept. 19
The Hamilton Herald-Record Sept. 20, 1929

Joe J. Cleveland died in this city on Thursday, September 19, at two o'clock ending an illness that had extended through a number of weeks. His condition was serious from the first, and although every means of restoration was employed he gradually grew weaker until the end. Had Mr. Cleveland lived until November, he would have celebrated his seventy-first birthday.

On Friday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, his body was borne to the Methodist church, where he had in life spent so many hours in worship, and in caring for the flowers and shrubbery which he attended for the sheer love of their beauty and adoration of the church premises, for Mr. Cleveland loved the church and his life in every way exemplified that exalted Christian character and was truly a shining light for his Master's cause. Rev. Frank L. Turner, pastor of the church conducted the sweetly solemn and comforting funeral services. Songs that he loved were sung by his younger friends, and great masses of the flowers that he loved and raised in such abundance in his home garden, and at the church covered his casket and filled the altar spaces. There were many exquisitely lovely floral pieces from the various banks and business concerns of the city and from friends in other towns. Interment in the Odd Fellows cemetery with the impressive Masonic ceremonies followed the church service. J. J. Cleveland, honored citizen, devout Christian, a trusted friend, and idolized husband and father, sleeps in peace, awaiting the glad resurrection mourn when all of the dead in Christ shall be raised.

Joe J. Cleveland was born and reared in Sweetwater, Tennessee. He came to Hamilton in 1886, and accepted a position as a member of the faculty of Hamilton public schools. He taught successfully for a number of years, and since his retirement from his profession has engaged mostly in farming enterprises, and banking interests. At the time of his death, he was president of the Hamilton Bank & Trust Co. He was married in 1887 to Miss Irene Perry, daughter of the late Dr. George F. Perry and Mrs. Sarah E. Perry, pioneer settlers of Hamilton. Three sons were born to them and with the mother survive his passing. They are George Cleveland, a farmer and ranchman in the Union community; Joe J. Cleveland, Jr., cashier of the Perry National Bank, of Hamilton, and Dr. C. C. Cleveland, a member of the clinic and one of the founders of the Hamilton Sanitarium. Four young grandchildren, whose association he treasured, will keep hallowed memories of him through life. The grandsons are Joe and George Cleveland, Jr., and the granddaughters are Loraine and Vesta Irene Cleveland, the boys being the sons of George Cleveland, and the little girls the daughters of Joe J. Cleveland, Jr. and Dr. Cleveland.

Mr. Cleveland is sincerely mourned in Hamilton and a legion of friends join in offering consolation of their deepest sympathy to the bereaved family whose sorrow, loneliness, an sense of loss none can measure save the pitying Father above.
