Dessie Dolores Ballantyne was born to Robert Thomas and Lydia Malinda Sutherland Ballantyne on April 1, 1897 in the Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma. Her family had left Texas in 1894 headed for Nebraska in a covered wagon. They stopped to see a relative in the Cherokee Nation and stayed there four years before continuing to Nebraska. Dessie was born while they were there. An Indian lady sat with her mother when she was born. A detailed account of their trip is in her father's memorial.

Dessie married Sylvester McCarty January 13, 1922 in Collbran, Colorado. They later moved to California and she passed away at French Camp, California and is buried in Cherokee Memorial Park, Lodi, California.

Dessie's information was obtained from her marriage license application, death certificate and cemetery records.
