ELLIS FOSTER, 85, DIES
One of Chariton's leading citizens, Ellis S. Foster, 85, died at his home early this morning after and extended illness.
He was the father of Mary Louise Hoegh, wife of former Iowa governor, Leo A. Hoegh, and now director of the office of civil and defense mobilization.
Funeral services for Mr. Foster will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from the Beardsley Funeral Home. The Rev. Lester C. Hall will officiate. Interment will be in the Chariton cemetery.
Manager of the Spurgeon store in Chariton from 1926 to 1944, he has served in a number of community, civic and church offices.
A member and past president of the Chariton Rotary club, he has served many years on the city library board, as president of the Lucas County Tuberculosis and Heart Associations, the Boy Scout Council and was a member of the First Methodist church board. He was honored last year by the Masonic Lodge here as a 50-year member.
Because of his lifelong interests in church and youth, relatives are requesting no flowers be given and ask that friends give to a memorial fund being established for the new Methodist church educational building fund.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. E. S. Foster; his daughters, Mrs. Mary Louise Hoegh and Mrs. Elsa Bradley of Minneapolis; sisters Mrs. Elihu Reed of Nevada, Mo., Mrs. Charles Beebe, St. Paul; a brother, Newton of Richland, Wash. Grandchildren include Robert and William Bradley of Albuquerque, N.M. and Kristin and Janice Hoegh of Washington, D.C.
