Ford served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army during World War I.

Ford married Edna Joy Shinn, who was born February 19, 1898 in Oklahoma, daughter of Edwin Forest Shinn (1853-1938) and Martha Jane 'Jennie' Boggs (1863-1946).

The 1940 Federal Census for Bartlesville, Oklahoma (Washington County) shows Joy Shields, a public school librarian, age 42, born in Oklahoma; and her husband, Ford N. Shields, stocks and bonds investor, age 46, born in Missouri.

Ford died November 19, 1976 in Oklahoma and was buried in Lexington, Oklahoma (Cleveland County) in the Lexington Cemetery. Joy died February 24, 1990 in Oklahoma and was buried in the Lexington Cemetery beside her husband.
