Served in Co. K, 21st Michigan Infantry Regiment from 26 Feb 1864 - 22 Jul 1865. Participated in the battles of Franklin and Nashville. He was mustered out of service after participating in the Grand Review in Washington, DC.He was a member of the Dushville Post No. 253, Department of Michigan, Grand Army of the Republic.

In 1867, George married Susannah Jordan Foglesong, widow of his late brother, Simon Peter Foglesong, who died in March 1865 while serving in the 180th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Their youngest son, Simon Peter Foglesong II, died in infancy in 1878. Five years after the death of Susannah, George married Mary Lamb, in October 1897.
