Henderson carried the title of Reverand and or Elder. Apparently at some point in his life he took up being a minister. Per page 286 of History of Jay County, IN; New Corydon..."Fellow Church, Christian, on Sec. 29, was built about 1863 and dedicated by Elder H. Graves, who preached here 12 or 14 years."
Another bit of evidence on this fact is from the Dec 31, 1879 Merom News "We learn that C. M. Graves (Cephas Moses), a son of Elder H. Graves of this place, died at his home in Switz City, Greene County, IN. Dec 19, 1879 age 32y 2m 24d. He will be remembered as a student here some years ago."
Note that Union Christian College was founded 20 Sep 1856 as Merom Bluff Academy, name changed to Union Christian College 4 Nov 1858. Records from the College list Elder H. Graves as a faculty member, a member of the Executive Committee and a member of the Board of Trustees.
They moved to Merom, IN ca 1864 as did William and James Graves, Henderson's brothers, and possibly Conway Stone, Elizabeth's brother. MEMOIR of Henderson Graves from his diary , Book #5 dated Jan 25, 1884: "Nineteen years ago this night I landed in Merom from Jay County. How times have changed since then with me. I thought I was old then (54) but here I am yet. My children scattered in many states and several of them dead. My wife buried several years ago. But I am living with my second wife [sic Sarah Bowers Cason Robertson] and we seem to have rather good health for persons of our age."

It seems like a short time but I see we have both failed very much. I the most of the two. I shall be 75 if I live till the 13th of May." Jul 22, 1885 (Book 5 p. 203) "We started to MO. to see David and Adeline. Got there on the 23rd and found all well. David and the children at the train to meet us. We staid nearly 3 weeks and had a fine visit with the children and old friends. I preached once while there and married Enoch Beardslee and Mary McNut. We went from there to Kansas to John Wards, found them all well and staid there 2 weeks..

Said estate is probably to be solvent. Henderson Graves, Administrator". Now, on 28 Apr 1878, "Our sensation this week was the marriage of H. Graves, Esq. to Mrs. John Robinson (sic Robertson). Mr. Robertson was buried three months ago yesterday and Mr. Graves preached the funeral discourse. Quite a coincidence."
His second wife Sarah may have been married up to twice previously as Brenda O'Donnell gives her name as Sarah Bowers Cason Robertson.
