LIFE SKETCH

Sarah "Sallie" Brown Naillon, daughter of Jim and Jane Brown, was born on the 13th of September, 1893. The 1910 and 1920 U.S. Census show she was born in Tennessee, yet the 1930 and 1940 Census show her birthplace as North Carolina. Research continues.

Tennessee State Marriage records show Sallie and William M. Naillon started their lives together on 11 September 1907 in Cocke County, Tennessee; two days after her 13th birthday. Her groom 19. The 1910 US Census finds them living in next to the household of his parents, they are the parents of 17 month old son, Parker. William is doing general farm work. They have both received enough education to read, William is not able to write at that time.

In 1920 they are still living in the next household to his parents, in Cocke County. Sallie, 26, and William, 31, have two new additions to their family: Jack, 5, and Joe, 3, (named after his grandfather). William is now working as a laborer, and now able to write. Life must have been incredibly challenging when he was unable to, even when and where they were living.

Three new children have been born to Sallie and William by 1930: Leath, 8; Bert, 6; Ray, 2; and 3 month old Benjamin. Oldest son Parker has moved from the household.

The 1940 census shows us that Sallie and William lived in Big Creek, McDowell County, West Virginia. It also shows that 5 years previously, they had resided in Cedar Bluff, Tazewell County. This census shares a little more about the family. They are living in a Public School Teachers Dormitory in Big Creek, West Virginia. What? This may be where the majority of families live on that particular census page? They have another child, Helen, age 7. William and sons, Joe and Leath, are all working as Timberman in the coal mining industry. It shows that Sallie had a 6th grade education and William went to school throuth 5th grade. For some reason, this cencus contradicts others and states they were born in North Carolina instead of Tennessee. They own their home.

Sallie and William had 8 known children, they were predeceased by 2 sons: Leath, a war hero, was killed in a car accident in 1972; and Parker, who died in Nashville in 1943.

Sallie lost William in 1977, and son, Jack in 1987. She passed away at Harlan Regional Hospital in Harlan County, Kentucky at the age of 97.
