James R. Haslip Sr., 96, of East Helena, passed away Dec. 4, 2004, following a long and successful life.

He was born Feb. 3, 1908, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Raymond James and Helen Sophia (Strand) Haslip. He had two sisters, Beatrice Marguerite and Mildred Helen Haslip (Glenn) Miller (John) Gregory. A younger brother, Ralph Herbert, died at the age of 2 years.

His family spent some of his early years in Great Falls where his dad, Ray, helped build the Rainbow Dam power station. After that, they moved to Adel, later to Orr, homesteaded in the Bear Paw Mountains where it took two days by wagon to get to Big Sandy, and finally to East Helena, where his father worked for the Montana Power Company.

He attended grade schools in Great Falls, and East Helena, and then attended Helena High School, where he participated in the first Vigilante Parade. He also attended the School of Mines in Butte. He worked for the Forest Service, clearing trails in the mountains he loved, north of Helena.

Jim liked to say that he found his million dollar baby in the five and ten cent store, after meeting Annie Louise (Gradishar) while she was working at Woolworth's. He married her on June 16, 1932, in Boulder. Jim and Annie raised three sons in East Helena. It was a marriage that lasted until her death in 1990. He lovingly cared for Ann during her lingering illnesses.

Early in his AS&R smelter career, he worked as a laborer, timekeeper and safety assistant. Later, Jim became personnel and safety director at the smelter six years before retiring in 1970.

Jim was an avid hunter, fisherman and camper in the Big Belt Mountains, where he and his family spent many wonderful times. After retirement, he enjoyed salmon and steelhead fishing. He was a successful baseball player as a pitcher, outfielder and hitter for the East Helena Smelterites. Jim passed on his interests in sports and the outdoors to his sons. He was always there to see them participate in their sporting endeavors and supported their education.

For many years, Jim was a member of Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church and later, the First Assembly of God Church. He also attended East Helena Methodist and Canyon Ferry Baptist Churches.

Surviving are his sister Millie; three sons, James R. Jr. (Delores) of East Helena, William R. of Bountiful, Utah, and Gerald J. (Cy) of Victor; grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Jim Jr.'s children: Karen (Greg) Chadwick with sons Pat and Johnathon; Bill (Shelley) with daughters Stacy and Christine, all of Helena; Kathy (Bob) Griffin with daughters Natalie, Lauren and Claire of Billings; and Heidi (Nathan) Martin with sons Jeremy and Gordon of Missoula - Bill's children: Mark (Sarah) with one son Jonah and two daughters Mollie and Grace, of Glendale, Arizona; and two daughters, Erin (David) Lee with three sons Triton, Enzo, and Blue; and April (David) Sherlock with a son Brigham and a daughter Abby, all of Calgary - Jerry's children: Craig (Christa) with sons, Jeff and Brian and daughter Jessica of South Jordan, Utah; Gary (Rosa) with daughters Melanie and Megan of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; and daughter Kris (Chris) Dunn with daughter Aspen of Riverton, Utah.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, in the Retz Funeral Home chapel in Helena, with the Rev. B.G. Stumberg officiating. The family requests that instead of flowers, memorials be given in Jim's name to the Lewis & Clark Humane Society, P.O. Box 4455, Helena, MT 59604, or the charity of the donor's choice.
