Harry S. McCarter, 91, died July 3 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Jan. 9, 1919, in Syracuse, he was the son of John L. and Ella (McCarter) McCarter. On Feb. 1, 1950, he married Genola May Sankey in Hutchinson. A Great Bend resident since 1952, coming from Larned and Hutchinson, he worked for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad as a ticket clerk, claims clerk, military escort and depot agent until his retirement in 1982. Following retirement he worked as a tour escort.
Mr. McCarter was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church and a 52 year member of the Great Bend Noon Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Ken McCarter and wife Loretta of Lathrop, Mo.; a brother, Ted McCarter of Overland Park; seven grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Melinda Eberley; two brothers, Clyde McCarter and John L. McCarter Jr.; and five sisters, Lola Jander, Dorothy Wooddell, Myrna Ratzlaff, Iva McCarter and Frances Mauk.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A private family inurnment will be held at the LaCrosse City Cemetery at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
