MAR. 13.
During the afternoon of Monday, the 6th, our community was startled by the announcement of the sudden affliction, by apoplexy, of Mrs. Mary A. Martin, wife of ex-Senator William A. Martin. She was at once rendered entirely unconscious and remained so, all efforts to bring about reaction having failed, till the end came on the morning of the 8th.
She died at the age of 49 years, 10 months and 19 days. Mrs. Martin leaves her devoted husband, 5 daughters and 3 sons, and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her loss.
The funeral services, which were very largely attended, took place on Saturday in the Lutheran church, and were conducted by her pastor ; interment in Greenmount cemetery.
Mrs. Martin was a daughter of Eliza and the late Henry Beamer, of Arendtsville. She was one of the most widely known and highly respected ladies of the community. She was an humble, devout, active Christian woman. In the society of our friends she was one of the most genial, and proved herself an inspiration to the many who sought the comforts and pleasures of her home. Her doors were always open for shelter and her heart ready for relief of the most humble. It is needless to add that she will be missed. Never were father, mother and children more closely bound to each other, and given in love one to another, than the family broken by the death of Mrs. Martin. A moving spirit, the Angel of Mercy, has taken its flight and is missed everywhere. She is missed by the church of which, with her family, she was a devoted member, she is missed by her aged mother, whom she so often comforted ; she is missed by us all, but now we bow in submission. Our loss is her gain
