THE PARIS NEWS, Sept. 03, 2007: "Spencer Long Abbett, 78, of Paris, passed away Saturday, September 1, 2007, at Paris Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Central Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Timothy Davenport-Herbst officiating. Interment follows at Evergreen Cemetery under the direction of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home. The family receives friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. He was born March 20, 1929, in Sherman, to Luke and Frances Abbett. He was a 1946 graduate of Paris High School, attended Paris Junior College, and received his bachelor of science degree from Baylor University. He served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. He retired as plant manager of Babcock & Wilcox in 1979. He served on the Paris Independent School District board of trustees, the Paris Junior College board of regents, the Paris Savings & Loan board of directors, the Lamar County Tax Appraisal board of directors and the L. P. McCuistion Hospital board of directors. He was a member, formerly an elder, of Central Presbyterian Church, as well as Paris Golf and Country Club and the Paris Elks Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joan Abbett Fuller; wife, Annie Simmons Abbett; and daughter, Carol Ann Abbett. He is survived by his wife, Gloria; brother, Luke Abbett and wife, Ruth, of Dallas; daughters, Linda Abbett of Garland, Julie Abbett Coats of Lubbock, and Robin Stewart and husband, Marcus, of Arlington; son, Rick Richards of Paris; grandchildren, Jeffrey Dreamer, Kirby and Kylee Stewart, Corey Coleman and Ryan Richards; and great-grandson, Carson Luke Coleman. Serving as pallbearers are Dr. Earl Bellamy, Robert Norment, John Amis, W. D. Stevenson, Carl Mac Coker, George Young, Gene Stallings and Mike Kennedy. Servings as honorary pallbearers will be the Paris High School class of 1946. The family would like to thank special caregiver Elsie Hughes, Millennium Home Care and the ICU nurses of Paris Regional Medical Center. If desired, memorials may be made to Central Presbyterian Church, 309 S. Church St., Paris, or the Paris Public Library, 326 S. Main St., Paris.
