Lee was the 5th child (4th son) of John Calvin "Bunk" Curls (1862-1910) and Sarah Elizabeth "Pun" Tucker Curls McMullen (1872-1951.) He was a grandson of Elder Henry Crawford Tucker, Jr. (1805-1883), one of the earliest white settlers of Colquitt County, Georgia.

Lee served in the United States Navy during both World War I and World War II. From the mid-1930's on he lived in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, where he worked as a fire fighter in Cincinnati and in nearby Cheviot.

Lee died at the Veterans' Administration Medical Center in Cincinnati, and was buried at Dayton National Cemetery.
