Golda Pirkey, 83, of Gainesville died at the Gainesville Health & Rehab. Center on May 20, 2010.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday May 22, 2010 at 10 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.

Golda Elaine Smith was born April 23, 1927 in Avery in Red River County to the late Herman and Christine Smith. She graduated Valedictorian from Avery High School and attended Draughons Business College in Dallas. On July 11, 1946, Golda married her high school boyfriend, James Earl Pirkey while he was on leave from the service. After the war, Golda and James Earl moved to Sulphur Springs for James Earl to attend Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. She substituted at the Sulphur Springs schools and they celebrated the birth of their son, Gary.

In 1952, the family moved to Littlefield where James taught Voc. Ag. and later became high school principal. They celebrated the birth of their daughter, Kathy. When both kids were in school, Golda went to work in the school cafeteria so she could be off with her children during the summers. She was affectionately known as the "Lunchroom Lady" by all the students because she made sure every student got a meal, even if they forgot their money.

In 1967, the family moved to Gainesville and Golda was again a "stay-at-home" mom until 1972 when she went to work for the GISD as a high school secretary to maintain the attendance records. She retired in 1996 at the age of 70. She continued to serve her church and community as a volunteer for CHEW, RSVP, the Stanford House, and she was the "Official Greeter" at First United Methodist Church and also served on numerous committees.

She was diagnosed with a rare muscle disease in 2000, but that didn't stop her from living her life to the fullest. She moved to the Wheeler House in 2003 and became their biggest cheerleader. She even led the residence exercise class from her wheelchair. Golda moved to Gainesville Health & Rehab in Sept. 2009.

Golda had a strong faith in God and loved her family and friends, the students and faculty she met at GHS, and her church family.

Golda Pirkey is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James Earl Pirkey, who passed away on Feb. 23, 1994.

Survivors include son and daughters-in-law, Gary and Janice Pirkey of Longview, and daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Robert Boone of Gainesville.

Grandchildren include Dr. Aaron James Boone and fiancée, Dr. Lora Plumlee of Waco, Amy Boone of Dallas, Jason and Nancy Pirkey of Plainview, Kymberlea and Mike VanBrocklin of Longview, and Garrett Pirkey of Lubbock. Great granddaughters are Natalie and Jacie Pirkey and Alea VanBrocklin.

She is also survived by her siblings, Sylvia Gregory of Georgetown; her brother and sister-in-law Billy Ralph and Jean Smith of Avery; and Nancy Idell of Garland; sister-in-law Ruby Pirkey of DeKalb; and aunt Mary Wardell of Houston. She is survived by many cousins, nephews and nieces and also her "adopted" family, Steven, Kim and Megan Fleming of Gainesville.

Pallbearers are Dr. Aaron Boone, Jason Pirkey, Garrett Pirkey, Mike VanBrocklin, Steven Fleming and Steve Boone. Honorary pall-bears are care-givers at the Wheeler House and the Gainesville Health & Rehab. Center
