GREENSBORO, NC — Mrs. Mabel Orene Battle passed away on Monday, January 7, 2008.

Mrs. Battle was born May 9, 1924, to Hannibal "Bub" and Mary "Plum" Arrington in Nash County.

Mrs. Battle was a graduate of Brick High School in Edgecombe County. She left North Carolina in 1942 to begin a career with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in Washington, DC.

In 1947, she married Jethro Battle (now deceased as of November 13, 2009) and moved to New York City.

She retired from Columbia University School of Physicians and Surgeons in 1972.

She was an active member of the District 5 School Board in New York City; the Harlem District Coordinators; Girl and Boy Scouts of America; Advisory Board of Lincoln East Community Center.

Upon Mr. Battle's retirement in 1988, they moved to Greensboro.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Renzel "Bo" Arrington and her first born granddaughter, Desiree R'nette Battle.

She is survived by four children, Milton Battle (Keywanda) of Pittsburgh, PA, Rasheeda Bin-Yahya (Shaka) of Jacksonville, FL, Minnie Battle Mayes (James) of Greensboro, and Gordon J. Battle of Tucson, AZ; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were entrusted to Hargett Funeral Service.
