Son of William and Abigail Clark Haskell. Henry married Margaret Bell Haskell on August 13, 1862 in Deerfield Massachusetts, the same day he was ordained after graduating Andover Seminary.

Henry and Margaret were among the pioneers of missions in Turkey. He served for 10 years before returning to America. In 1887 they returned to Bulgaria where he served several years as director of the Collegiate and Theological Institute at Samakov. They returned to America in 1911 on furlough where he settled in Oberlin where his grandchildren were attending college.
