BETTY J ABEL - Betty Justine Abel, 80, of Shelbyville, died Sunday, January 18, 2004, at Major Hospital.
Born June 24, 1923, in Marion County, she was the daughter of George Franklin and Lena Marie Shafer Applegate.
She married Henry Everett Abel on January 24, 1942, and he preceded her in death on July 30, 1982.
Survivors include three sons, Maynard Lewis and David George Abel, both of Shelbyville and Alan Wayne Abel of Maria Stein, Ohio and Paul Lee Abel of Salt Lake City, Utah; two daughters, Sheila Darlene Rutherford of Indianapolis and Sheryl Ann Fugate of Shelbyville; one sister, Joan Cammack of Noblesville; 25 grandchildren; 32 great - grandchildren and one great - great - grandchild.
She also was preceded in death by one son, Neil Everett Abel; one sister; and four brothers.
Mrs. Applegate was a Shelbyville resident for more than 50 years. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Abel graduated in 1941 from Warren Central High School in Indianapolis. She was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church and Order of Eastern Star No 316 of Morristown.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM today, with an Eastern Star service at 7:30 PM at Carmony - Ewing Harrison Street Funeral Home, 819 S Harrison St. Funeral services will be at 1 PM Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev Robb L Barlow officiating.
Interment will be in London Cemetery in Shelby County.
