Elwood, the son of Asa and Annie Hicks, traveled with his parents in 1837 from his native Belmont County, Ohio to Tazewell County, Illinois where he grew up and attended the common schools.

He made an overland trip to California in 1859 with a drove of cattle as part of the Robert Kimble caravan. He returned via Panama and New York City and arrived home during December 1862.

Elwood married Eliza A. Shumaker on 5 March 1863. They became the parents of six children, four boys and two girls. He was a Republican and a Quaker.

On the 1870 census, Elwood's household contained a boarder, Gabriel Stinnet who was 53 years old and made his living as a farm laborer. It is possible this was a relative of Mary Jane (Stinnet) Hicks, the wife of Asa Hicks, Jr.

In the 1880's, the family moved to Adair County, Missouri where Elwood's sister Marietta was living.
