Naval officer, born in Bryantown, Maryland; died in Martinsburg, W. Virginia. He was appointed a midshipman from the District of Columbia, and, after attending the naval school at the navy yard in Washington, he was ordered to the sloop "Erie," and then attached, during the war of 1812, to the brig "Jefferson" on Lake Ontario. He was commissioned as lieutenant, 15 March 1817" as commander, 9 February 1837" as captain, 29 March 1844, commanding the flagship "Brandywine " in the Brazil squadron from 1844 till 1850, and the navy yard at Brooklyn from 1852 till 1855. During the civil war he was on special service. He was retired with the rank of commodore on 4 April 1867, and made a rear-admiral on the retired list, 15 August 1876.
