Lynchburg - Harold Hydrick Bates, 71, of Lynchburg, died Friday, September 9, 2005, at his residence. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, September 11, at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Burial will be at Florence Memorial Gardens with full military rites. Mr. Bates was born December 22, 1933, in Norway, the son of the late John K. and Bertha Sutcliffe Bates. He was a tech sergeant (retired) U.S. Air Force, former police chief of Lynchburg and a member of Benton Lodge 26, AFM. Surviving are his wife, Pansy Cooke Bates, of the home in Lychburg; one son, Denny Bates (Trish), of Florence; one daughter, Tamara Rhodes (Alan), of Lake City; two brothers, Walter Bates (Patti), of Norway and Wyman Bates (Chick), of Orangeburg; two stepdaughters, Lynda (Gary) Clemmons, of Whiteville, N.C. and Pam (Mike) Gasque, of Lake View; one stepson, Chris Ford, of Lake View; five grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, September 11, at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 W.
