Thomas enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 17 January 1862 in Columbia, South Carolina. He was mustered as a Private in Company G, 22nd South Carolina volunteer Infantry. He was killed in the blow up at Petersburg during the Battle of the Crater. His body was exhumed from the crater after the war and buried in a mass grave at Blandford. His name is listed on a plaque in the church.
