He was born in Brown County near Brownwood, Texas, April 23, 1919, to Luther and Elma Woods. He graduated from Peacock High School in 1937. He was a popular high school actor and high point basketball player for Peacock. Walter attended two years at Sam Houston 1937-1939 and two years at ACU from 1939-1941. Walter married Frances Smith, a second grade teacher, July 3, 1941. They had four children: Judith Wilson and Cynthia Robinson both teachers in the Abilene area, Larry "David" Woods, a retired lawyer, of Hamby, and Lin Woods, an artist, of Abilene. Walter was a business man for 35 years, financier of mobile homes, farmer and rancher, owner of two grocery stores, broker of insurance and real estate, newspaper owner, reporter and editor for five years in Gaines county, Seminole, Texas. Walter has been an active member of Hillcrest Church of Christ in Abilene since 1983.
In Abilene, Walter has been an active member of The Storytellers Club, the Iris and Day Lily Society, and the Kiwanis Club. While a member of the Kiwanis Club, Walter was the editor of the GOLDEN TIGHTWAD magazine. He was also an elder for the Westside Church of Christ for 23 years in Seminole, Texas. Water has been an active member of Hillcrest Church of Christ in Abilene since 1983.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Marie Woods, and his sisters, Doris Garrett and Cleone Courtright, and by his brothers, Don Woods, Paul Woods, and Leonard Woods.
Walter has seven grandchildren: Sabrina Wilson, Stephanie Thornton, Shana Morrow, Frances Clements, Walter Wiggins, Charles Wiggins, and Jaxon Woods. Great grandchildren: Tyler Wilson, Holly Wilson, Vita Sehic, Ira Morrow, Elizabeth Morrow, Allen Clements, Anastasia Clements, Max Thornton, and Jet Thornton. One great-great grandchild: Azmari Steele.
