Son of Alexander and Martha Brockington McCollough.

Hugh enlisted in Company A, Tucker's Cavalry on March 19, 1862 at Pawley's Island, age 33. He was assigned to Company B on April 8, 1863 and was on that roster when it became Company F, 7th SC Cavalry. Present March - October 1862; detailed November 1862 - February 1863; present March - April 1863; detailed in Commissary Department 3 Military District of SC May 10, 1863 - February 1864; present mounted March - October 1864.

Hugh never married. In the 1870 census he's listed as head of house in Turkey, Williamsburg County with his mother Martha and two sisters. In 1880 he's listed as single with his sister Louisa living with him. By 1900 he's head of a household that includes two sisters and seven nieces and nephews.

Hugh died on February 25, 1910 and is buried at the McCullough-Grayson Cemetery in Cedar Swamp, Williamsburg County, SC.
