Frederick's father, James William "Bud" Calhoun died in 1906, leaving his mother Mattie Jane Purvis Calhoun pregnant and widowed at 35 years old, and Fred fatherless at 14. According to the Census taken in Montgomery County, Georgia, on April 27, 1910 Fred J. Calhoun, just 18 years old, was identified as the head of their farming household which included his mother; three sisters - Myrtle M. (15), Carrie C. (14), Nonnie (9); and five brothers - Rufus B. (12), Lucian H. (10), David (8), Barney (4), and Sam (3). Less than two years later, Fred married Sallie P. Kitchens on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1911. According to the 1920 Census, Fred was still farming while living on Hazlehurst Road in Jeff Davis County, Georgia with Sallie and their 3-year-old daughter Edna and Fred's younger brother Lucian. Fred moved his growing family to Tampa, Florida where he worked as a packer in a feed store, as evident in the 1930 Census which lists Edna, now 13 years old, along with daughter Juanita (9) and son S.M. (5) all living at 2913 19th Avenue. Later, according to the 1940 Census, Fred's family, still in Tampa, but now living at 1125 East North Bay expanded to include Jerome P. (16) and Clarence L. (9). Fred, at 48 years old, was also now a grandfather to Edna's (23) son Reason E. (2).
