Hickman had killed his first wife, Nancy Marshall Hickman, and was sent to be cured and let out of the hospital. He then murdered Margaret by cutting her throat. He spent the rest of his life in prison.
Mary Ellen was adopted by Zephaniah Keeth and Luzzanah (Schoonover) Keeth, Margaret's sister.
