James Donaldson Montgomery was the son of Robert & Nancy Donaldson "Berryman" Montgomery.

James married Margaret (maiden name unknown) about 1869 or 1870. They had no children of their own. However, according to the 1880 U.S. Federal Census their nieces Olive, age 7 & Anna, age 5 are living with them. They were still living with them in 1885. James was a farmer.

Margaret died before 1900 as James was living at that time in Kansas with his brother Henry Worth Montgomery. He was a stock shipper and widower. Then in 1910 he was living in Poweshiek County, Iowa with his brother Charles Montgomery.
