SARAH CAMILLA COLLINS
Sarah Camilla Collins, youngest of eight children of Samuel and Mary Jane (Mamie) Emmerson Holben, was born February 14, 1904, in Eatonville, Washington.

Following Samuel's death in November 1904, Mamie moved the family to Magnolia, Iowa to be with family. Camilla fondly remembered growing up in Magnolia and Pisgah, Iowa. Although the family had little money, they experienced much love in their home.

Baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1914. Camilla was a faithful member until her death.

She graduated from Logan High School in 1922. After attending Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, she taught in North Whitcaboro, Pisgah, Ralston, and Troy Mills, Iowa.

In 1925 she and her mother operated The Lamoni Hotel on Main Street, and Camilla attended Graceland College. While at Graceland, she met William E. Collins. Camilla and Bill were married in the home of his father in Oakland, California on March 10, 1928.

They returned to Lamoni in 1929, and Bill continued his Graceland education. Their first child, Hale, was born in Lamoni. In 1930 they went back to California to live in the San Francisco Bay area. Vivian and David were born there. Later, the family again moved to the Midwest where their fourth child, Bob, was born.

Camilla made all these moves an adventure for her family. Bill died in December of 1950. Camilla and her sister, Caroline Chatburn, cared for their invalid mother until her death in 1952. Camilla then taught herself to type and was recruited to be the secretary in the Alumni Office at Graceland College. She retired in 1969.

Camilla loved to write, especially for children. Her writings were published in the R.L.D.S. Sunday school papers. "Zion's Hope and "Stepping Stones," and in the book entitled "Pioneer Helpers." Other poems were published in "Voices of the Restoration." She also wrote two inspirational books about her childhood and her married life, "At Home With Mama Mamie" and "In The Hollow of His Hand." Camilla was well-known for her "jingles," her name for most of her poetry. Family members and friends received special jingles for birthdays and other joyous occasions. She said these were easy to write, for her thoughts came out in verse form.

Preceding Camilla in death were her parents; her husband Bill; and her seven siblings: Caroline Chatham, Ethel Brandt, Elva Silsby, Elson Holben, Pearl Chapman, James Holben, and Helen Ballantyne.

Camilla is survived by her sister-in-law Gladys Holben of Altamonte Springs, Florida; her four children: Hale and Barbara Lee Collins and Vivian and Glen Campbell of Lamoni, Iowa, David and Janis Collins of Seattle, Washington, and Robert Collins of Santa Clara, California; eight grandchildren: John and Aaron Campbell, Bill, Betty and Jim Collins, Anna and Kate Collins, Kim Collins; and five great-grandchildren: Brooks and Hunter Campbell, Steven Collins, Gabriel and Larkin Chapman; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Camilla died January 10, 2000, at Lamoni Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lamoni, Iowa. Cremation arrangements were through Slade -O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 22, 2000, at Lamoni RL.D.S. church in Lamoni, with Elders Howard Booth and Celia Schall officiating. Memorials may be given to Outreach International, P. 0. Box 210, Independence, Missouri 64051-0210.
