Charles Hurshel Quarles, 70 of 27 Berry Hill Drive, Asheville, died Saturday In an Asheville hospital.

He had lived most of his life in Buncombe County and retired from the shipping department of Vanderbilt Shirt Company. He previously retired from the United States Navy serving in World War II He was a son of the late Rudy & Cornelia Boyd Quarles. He attended Christian Missionary Alliance Church.

Surviving are his wife, Christine Young Quarles; two sons, Charles W. Quarles of Oakland, Ore., and Peter Quarles of Oakland, Calif.; a stepson, John Washburn of Arden; a daughter, Margaret Pettibone of Eugene, Ore; a brother, Vernon Quarles of Asheville; a sister, Twila Gardner of Durham; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The Rev. Nane Starnes will officiate.

The family will be at the residence. Memorials may be made to a charity.

Moore Funeral Home at Forest Lawn is in charge of arrangements.
