During WWII, he served as an officer at the Pentagon. He assisted in recording and compiling a book on the history of World War II.
He represented the United States Chamber of Commerce at the United Nations building in New York City since it had been organized, retiring just a few years before he died. In 1963 The United States Chamber of Commerce announced the appointment of Mr. Cruickshank as its European representative, where he directed the European operation of the organization in Paris.
Earl lived in Joplin, Missouri the last four years of his life moving from New York City.
He never married.
