He married Sarah J "Sallie" Parris on 11 May 1847, in Overton, Tennessee. Based on tax records, he farmed a significant amount of land in Tennessee. James enlisted on December 1, 1863, into the 22nd Battalion Infantry in the Civil War on the Confederate side. He died on 15 April 1891, in Pickett, Tennessee, at the age of 68, and was buried in Government Cemetery, Pickett, Tennessee. In 1978 an application was created for a Flat Bronze Marker for the gravesite.
