Died on March 20th at his home near Eulie, Macon County, Mr. William Smothers. Uncle Billy as he was generally known was perhaps the oldest man in this county being 95 years of age. He was born in Virginia, but spent the most of his life in this county. He was a soldier under General Jackson, and was at the Battle of New Orleans. His sight and general health failed some years back, but his mind was good to the end. He suffered much in the last year with cancers having spread on his body and they caused his death.
