John Bryant Peery was the oldest child of eight children born to Joseph Lafayette "Jep" Peery and Annie Lee "Fannie" Jolley. He married Ruby Grace Webb on December 25, 1919 at the bride's home and officiated by her grandfather, C. C. McDearman.

John, along with several of his brothers, fought in World War I. As many veterans, he never spoke of his time overseas, but among his life time of meager belongings survived a postcard he mailed to Miss Ruby while serving in France.

John and Ruby lived on the Dresden/Paris Highway near Ore Springs, but in his last year after battling prostate cancer and losing his eyesight in one eye, he shared a residence with his daughter, Mary Lou Tyree or his son, Paul Ray Peery, both of Nashville, Tennessee. A week before his death, following an extended hospital stay, he was moved into Trevecca Healthcare, a nursing home in Nashville, where he died at 82 years, 11 months, 2 days. His remains were taken back to the land he called home--one he had lived his entire life, Dresden. He joined his wife at their burial plot at the Jolley Springs Cemetery, which had been named for his mother's family who had donated the land.

John, or Mr. Johnie as he was called by those who knew him, had two children, who both survived him, Mary Lou (Bill) Tyree, and Paul (Jean) Peery; six grandchildren: Frank (Pat) Tyree, Peggy (Jim) Flowers, Ben (Susan) Tyree, Janice (Gary) Foster, Bob (Missy) Tyree, and Paula Peery, two step-grandchildren: Mike and Dycus Bennett; four great-grandchildren: Kim Foster, Keith Flowers, Karen Flowers, and Sharon Tyree.

The official death record states that John Peery died of prostrate cancer, but in reality he died of a broken heart, truly missing his long time companion of 55 years.

John and Ruby Webb Peery raised their own fresh vegetables and John even killed and put up a hog in his last years. They also raised chickens for fresh eggs. A freshly killed squirrel, chicken, or fish caught from a nearby pond would often be a part of their meals. I never visited their home without being sent home with fresh tenderloins, farm fresh eggs, popcorn, cut flowers, or something home-grown that they could share. They were not rich in material wealth, but they had a true Christian heart and gave with a love all they had. They were devoted to their home congregation, Jolley Springs Missionary Baptist Church, as well as their families. John was a carpenter and farmer by trade.
