She then attended Western Reserve University Hospital School of Anesthesia in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1947-1948, and became a certified nurse anesthetist.

She entered the Army Nurse Corps from 1941-1947, and during her service was assigned to Camp Livingston, Louisiana; Barnes General Hospital in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and the Alaskan Theater of Military Service in the Aleutian Islands. She was then recalled to service for the Korean War in 1951. She served at Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, and also worked at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. At the time of her discharge, she held the rank of captain.

Thelma married Dale Clark Fait on Dec. 3, 1950 in Huntsville. In 1962, she returned to work and was employed by the Columbus Hospital as a nurse anesthetist until retirement in 1980.

Thelma was an active member of the First Nazarene Church, serving wherever she was needed in senior group and social activities of the church. She was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Church of the Nazarene in April 2001.

In the fall of 2002, she moved to Crest Hill, Illinois, to be closer to her sons. She moved to Provena Villa Franciscan in 2007, when her declining health required full-time nursing care.
