OBIT: Elizabeth Pittenger was born near Fairview, Hancock county, West Virginia, March 24th, 1824, died near Astoria, July, 21, 1899. Aged 75 years, 3 months, and 27 days. May 14, 1846 she was married to Wm. Aten who preceded her to the better world just one year and three days. They resided on the farm where they died more than fifty years, and reared to man and womanhood three sons, five daughters and two granddaughters. One son and one daughter having died in infancy. She united with the Presbyterian church in her fifteenth year and lived a devoted Christian more than 60 years.

"The scrapbook is one which my great grandmother, Amanda Bryan Wetzel, or perhaps my grandmother, Nettie Wetzel Dean, pasted lots of obituaries of family and friends. These families were from around McDonough, Fulton and Schuyler Counties. These obits are probably around a hundred years old or may be more." -N.H.

May 14, 1846, was the date of the marriage of our subject [William T Aten -ed], with Elizabeth Pittenger, who was born in Virginia in 1824. They have had ten children, namely: Melissa J., Sarah C., Elizabeth, Emma, John P., William N., Frank, Henry M., Ida M. and Mary E. Mr. Aten and his wife have been connected with the Presbyterian Church since 1841, and he has been an Elder since 1854. The sincerity of their Christian faith is exemplified in their daily lives, which are guided by the highest principles of right.

Wm Aten farmer sec. 7, P.O. Astoria was born in Hancock Co. Va., Oct 8, 1821, married Elizabeth Pittinger, a daughter of John Pittinger who settled in Va in pioneer times. In 1844 he came from Va to Illinois settling in Vermont twp where he entered a tract of land disposing of this in 1848. He settled in Woodland twp where he purchased his present farm of 160 acres on which he has erected a substantial brick residence. Of their 10 children, 8 are living: Melissa, Sarah C, Emma A (school teacher), John P, Willie K, Henry M, Ida M, and Mary E.
