Morgan Durwood Locker came to Bailey County from Duke, Oklahoma in January of 1925 with his parents, William Arthur and Etta (Sollee)Locker. When they arrived they put up a large tent and lived in it until they could complete a two room house. They lived in the Bula Community. Morgan began and completed his education at Bula, graduating in 1939. After graduation he worked at North American Aviation building aircraft until 1943 when he volunteered for the Air Force. He served in the Philippines and surrounding islands. When WWII ended he went into Japan with the occupation army and was discharged in 1946.
Frieda (Martin) Locker is the daughter of William Estus and Lantie (Hankins) Martin. She was born and began school in Grady, New Mexico. She went two years at Center, a small school just south of Clovis, New Mexico, then moved to Texico when she was in the fifth grade and graduated from there in 1941. She attended Benson's Commercial College in Clovis and began to work for First Federal Savings and Loan where she was working when she married Morgan Locker in 1947. They moved to the farm west of Muleshoe where Morgan was engaged in farming.
They have three children living in Muleshoe. Daughter Gail is married to Benny Bruns and they have two children, Leah Ann and Luke Jackson. Son Don married Donna Locke and they have four children, Dawna, Carissa, Briane Nicole and Morgan Don. Son Fred married Ruth Street and they have three daughters, Amy Jill, Stacy Danae, and Mindy Nicole. Daughter Karen lives in Gainesville, Florida and works as a secretary/bookkeeper. She is presently working toward her masters at the University of Florida.
Morgan farmed a few years then sold his equipment and leased out the land. They spent the winter of 1953-54 in Florida. In the fall of 1954 they purchased a small spray operation, leased the airport land and began to build hangars and eventually a shop, office and home. They added flight training, charter work, and had a FAA and VA approved flight training school. In 1964 Morgan became a designated flight examiner for the FAA. It was a family operation with Don and Fred helping with the flight operations and Gail and Karen with the office and home.
When they would have a lull in the business, they would all pile into the airplane and head for a vacation in the Florida Keys. This was a very special time. There was a lot of swimming, skiing, fishing, sight-seeing and diving for lobster and shellfish. In the summer of 1958 while they were in Florida they received word that the four place hangar they had just completed was destroyed by a tornado along with the four planes in the hangar. This was the second tornado to hit the airport and a few years later there was to be another to damage some of the buildings.
They retired in 1979 and deeded all the buildings to the City of Muleshoe. Morgan was still a designated examiner and continued in that capacity until his death in July, 1981. (Submitted by Frieda Locker)
