Clyde Eddie (Shang) Herndon was fatally injured and Gary Simms suffered bruises and shock when a pick-up truck driven by Simms over-turned on the highway seven miles east of Panhandle at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

Herndon was given emergency treatment at the office of Dr. O. York in Panhandle, when the injured men were brought here by tourists, and was taken to the Northwest Texas Hospital at Amarillo where he died of internal injuries at 5:55 a.m. Thursday. He was 37 years old.

After being treated here Simms was taken to his home and later taken to Amarillo where x-rays revealed he suffered no fractures. He is now at his home in Panhandle.

In his examination here Dr. York found that Herndon was suffering from a back injury, a smashed shoulder and a severe laceration on an arm.

The accident occurred when Simms and Herndon were going toward White Deer. Simms evidently fell asleep while driving, he said, letting the truck run off the road where it turned over several times. Herndon, who was asleep at the time of the mishap, was thrown out of the cab and pinned beneath the truck.

Funeral services for Herndon will be held at 2:30 p.m. today from the First Methodist church with Rev. James Todd, minister of the First Christian church, officiating. Burial will be in Panhandle cemetery.

Pall-bearers will be Charley Franklin, J.J. Witten, Loyd Thorp, Raymond Durrett, Evertt [sic] Pierce and George Crossman.

Herndon is survived by his widow, two sons, Clyde Wayne, 12, and Joe Eddie, 10, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Herndon, Pampa; two sisters, Mrs. C.A. Hawkins, Panhandle, and Mrs. Fred Sloan, Pampa; and two brothers, Clifton and Walter L., Jr., both of Perryton. Another sister, Mrs. R.L. Hawkins, is deceased.

He married Miss Faye Roberts, daughter of Mrs. Guy Roberts, Panhandle, Sept. 4, 1924.

Herndon has been engaged in ranching and farming near Panhandle since 1923. He owned a farm about four miles northwest of Panhandle and farmed a number of sections of the Moore place.

He was born in Hamilton county, Texas, May 12, 1900, moved to Oklahoma with his parents in 1904 and went to Gray county in 1912. He attended high school at Pampa and Lawton, Okla., and graduated at the latter school, starring as captain of the high school grid team. He also played football at Pampa high school.

He played football at Central State Teachers Colege [sic], Edmond, Okla., making the all-state team as fullback two years. Recently in a poll at the college he was named as the greatest fullback ever to play at Edmond.
