Daniel was an ordained Methodist Episcopal South minister. He was a circuit riding preacher, and minister at the old Mt. Carmel Church in Adair County. He also worked as a farmer and a blacksmith. He was a son of John B. Monroe and Esther Bing.

He first married Elizabeth Prather Rice on March 30, 1830 in Green Co., KY and had ten children: John Benjamin, Louisa Prather, Hester Ann, George Robert, James Thompson, Daniel Rice, Pleasant Sanders, Nancy Frances, Milton Elliot, and Mary Elizabeth.

He second married Virenda Hincher Waggener, widow of James D. Ferguson, on October 15, 1856 in Green Co., KY and had three children: William Fisher, Willis Wheat, and Emily Frances.
