Cyrus was born with a mental disability and was never able to function on his own. His father took care of him until passing away in 1875, and after that Cyrus V. lived with his brother and then with his sister and each of their families. His mother, Betsey, was made his legal guardian in 1878.
May 18, 1883, Cyrus was sent to the Eastern Michigan Asylum in Pontiac. On December 22, 1885, Cyrus was transferred to the Michigan Asylum in Kalamazoo. He died there on February 25, 1896.
Cyrus was brought home to Lansing and laid to rest in the Dimondale Cemetery where his sister, Anna Martha (Packard) Brigham, is also interred. His marker was wooden so it is not there anymore, but he is buried in the Brigham family plot.
