DEQUINCY —- Verla Ruth Smith, 87, entered the gates of Heaven on Friday, June 25, 2010, from her home surrounded by her loved ones.
Her services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 28, at the Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy. The Rev. Gary Bankson and the Rev. Alfred Gibson will officiate. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. Visitation will be 5-10 p.m. today, June 27, at the funeral home and from 1 p.m. Monday at the church.
She is a native of DeQuincy and lived in Houston for 29 years while working in the insurance industry. She was a founding member of Life Worship Center and was an active and faithful member in the churches she attended throughout her life. She set an example by leading, Sunday school class organizing and hosting many church and women's ministries activities.
Verla Ruth is survived by her sons and their families — the Rev. Alvin Dale and his wife, Susan Smith, their daughter, Suzanne (Smith), and her husband, Jeff Cupstid, their grandson, Jacob Cupstid, and granddaughter, Rebecca Smith; Alton Dan and his wife, Dorothy Smith, and their son, Dan Smith Jr.; and John Milton and his wife, Linda Smith, and their sons, A.J. Smith and James Smith — a sister, Myrna Perkins Kirby; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She loved her grandchildren, who called her "Millie." She made sure we knew the family history and will be loved and missed by all. She was preceded in death by her husband, Issac Samuel Smith Hudson; parents; Henry Newton Perkins and Mary Chloe "Mubbie" Perkins Yellott; stepfather, Jack "Pa Jack" Yellott; brothers, Earl Perkins and H.N. Perkins Sr.; and sisters, Nyra Hicks and Vomma Swann.
