Dr. Haskell Edmond Hestand, 89, a long-time Odessa physician, died Wednesday, October 6th, 1993, at Medical Center Hospital.

Hestand was born August 2nd, 1904, in Sherman, Texas. Other than four years of military service, he had lived in Odessa since 1937.

In addition to practicing medicine in Odessa for almost 40 years, Hestand involved himself with dozens of professional, community, church and business activities. He was president of the medical staff at Medical Center Hospital and served as director for First State Bank.

In 1991, MCH announced the Dr. H.E. Hestand Humanitarian Award, which recognized individuals in direct patient care who show unusual concern for patients and their families.

Charles Perry, president of Avion Flight Centre, served with Hestand on several bank boards, and was full of praise for his late friend. "Integrity and honesty -- you just couldn't say any more," Perry said.

Perry recalled that Hestand was voted Man of the Year by the Odessa Chamber of Commerce in 1981. The award was a surprise to Hestand, who was out of town at the time.

"I sent a plane to pick him up," said Perry. "We've been friends for years."

While Hestand was deeply involved with civic activities, his first love was his patients. "He loved people and loved caring for them," said Aubrey Barlow, a longtime friend. "That's what made him such a great doctor."

Perry said that many people in the area Perry's age were most likely delivered by Hestand. According to a biography filled out by Hestand for the Odessa American in 1967, he had delivered more than 8,000 babies at that date.

Hestand also found time to have fun. Barlow said he was an avid deer hunter, making time each year to "get away and be with the guys." He also loved the Dallas Cowboys and had 50-yard line seats.

Dr. Life Barnard worked alongside Hestand for several years, finally taking over his practice when Hestand retired. He was amazed with Hestand's energy.

"He would go home every day and take a little nap. It seemed to rejuvenate him.... He also had remarkably good health, until the last few years."

Barnard said that many of Hestand's patients were friends as well.

"Having been here and having practiced as long as he did, he got to know the families, and over a period of time when you do that it becomes more than a doctor/patient relationship."

He added that many of his patients still inquire about Hestand.

Hestand's friends and colleagues seemed unable to adequately describe sum him up. "he was one of the great men I've known," said Barlow.

Services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Janette Hestand of Odessa; his son, Haskell E. Hestand Jr of Dallas; his brother M.C. "Cliff" Hestand of Sherman; and his sister, Dorothy Murphy of Sherman.
