James V. Clancy, 81

NEWBURYPORT — James Vincent Clancy, age 81, formerly of Newburyport and East Kingston, N.H., died Saturday, March 20, 2010. He passed away surrounded by his family at the Amesbury Village Nursing Center, where he had resided for the past five months.

Dad was born in Newburyport, Feb. 9, 1929, the son of James F. Clancy and Catherine (Allen) Clancy. His only sibling, Paul F. Clancy died in May, 2004. Dad was married to Arlene Mary (Smillie) of Manchester, N.H., a graduate of the Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing, for 44 years and together, they lovingly raised five children. After graduating from Newburyport High School in the Class of 1946, Dad joined the U.S. Army for a two-year enlistment. Like so many of his generation, he proudly served his country. He spent five months and 28 days on active duty in Korea.

Returning home, he followed his father into the grocery industry, first with First National Stores and then with a young growing company, DeMoulas/Market Basket. Always a friendly and familiar face, he managed stores in Haverhill, and Salem, N.H., before becoming the first manager of the chain's new Seabrook, N.H. store and 10 years later, in his hometown of Newburyport. He finished his career in the Newburyport store, retiring in 1991.

Dad was an avid automobile enthusiast. He owned many antique cars which he loved to restore and display. He was an active member of the Profile Automobile League. Dad could always amaze his grandchildren with the ability to name in order each car he owned by year, make and model, and there were many.

He is survived by Kevin and Lise Clancy of Long Valley, N.J., Kathleen and Gene Charmanski of Plaistow, N.H., Brian and Mary Anne Clancy of Newburyport, Jamie and Dianne Clancy of Mansfield, and Margaret Clancy and Kirsten Fatland of Seattle. He leaves 12 grandchildren, Seamus, Meghan and Shannon Clancy; Kara, Alisa and Kyle Charmanski; Conor, Mary Elizabeth and Joseph Clancy; and Victoria, Katherine and Olivia Clancy. He is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 25, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Green Street, Newburyport. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Newburyport. At Dad's request, there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Anna Jaques Community Health Foundation, 25 Highland Ave., Newburyport, MA 01950. Funeral arrangements are by the Twomey LeBlanc & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport. For online condolences, please visit their web site at www.contefuneralhomes.com.
