Lillie Belle came from a very large family of at least 15 siblings of whom she was the first born in Ohio where her parents were married in 1871. While growing up, her family moved around quite a bit: from Ohio to West Virginia and then prior to 1890 to Washington County, Kansas. It was in Linn, Kansas, where she met and married her husband Lewis. Her natal family moved on to Oklahoma and then to Colorado.

She and Lewis initially moved to Oklahoma, following her parents, and were homesteaders. During the next decades they moved to Washington; Oregon; Alberta, Canada; back to Oregon and then to farms in the San Joaquin Valley, California, eventually retiring to Humboldt County. California.

Her son remembered her thusly: "My mother was a model pioneer wife [cooking, baking, washing, tending house with no amenities] ... after her marriage ... on a homestead ..., the first years was starvation years, the hardships she went through, she alone knew. ... Mother life was a rocky road ... she was very religious, she tried hard to live her religious beliefs, .... I honor her steadfastness in her beliefs, her honesty." And she and Lewis raised ten children to adulthood - no mean feat.
