Benjamin Franklin Byrd was the youngest of ten children born to John and Nancy Bird. John was killed three months after Benjamin was born. Nancy moved her children to Russell County, Alabama from Stewart County, Georgia several months later. According to the family story, it was at this point that the spelling of the surname was changed from Bird to Byrd.
