After the war, he returned to Gillespie County, where he died on July 31, 1981. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Kathie Mary Ersch Behrends and brother, Johnny Ersch. Survived by his wife, Eleanora, a daughter, and sister, Margaret Rosa Ersch Birck.
