The district in which Abel S. Stewart and his wife, the former Lydia Kirkley were born is not clear. Some say Kershaw District, and some say Darlington District. Lydia's obituary says Kershaw.

However, in old Darlington District they raised a large family in the Philadephia community. Although Abel is likely buried beside Lydia, there's no proof of it that I've found. Maybe Wesley Chapel has some records that would say. It is known that she died around a decade previous to his death, and that he is not known to have remarried. If he is buried next to her, his grave is not visible, although there is room for a grave.

At the time of their deaths, Philadelphia Methodist Church in the Philadelphia section, where they attended, were burying their dead at Wesley Chapel, possibly the oldest church in Darlington County, and formerly known as the Gully Church. Philadelphia appears to have started their cemetery sometime in the middle 1900s.

An obituary for Abel S. Stewart from the historic Methodist periodical "Southern Christian Advocate" from 1888, written by J.W. Murray reads:

"STEWART - Abel Stewart was born in Darlington County March 7, 1799, and died October 19, 1888. He perhaps was among the oldest men in this section. Brother Stewart belonged to the Methodists of the early day. He was a consistent member of the Church for fifty-two years, and during those years enjoyed the life and power of a well-defined religious experience. He served as class leader of Philadelphia Church for forty-two years, and his devotion to the cause of Christ was such that no one, saint or sinner, ever doubted his piety. It is wonderful to record that he never was seriously sick a day in his long life, and never took a dose of medicine from a physician until two days before his death, when one dose was given to quiet his nerves. He was entirely free from pain in his last illness, although conscious to the end. Our dear old brother was the father of fourteen children, ten of which survive him and are members of the Church. The veteran of this obituary notice lived to see seventy-five grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. May his children who are still alive remember his long and faithful life, his sweet and peaceful death, and strive by God's grace to meeting him where parting is unknown."

Their children included:
- William Franklin Stewart who married Sena A. Melissa Galloway
- Sarah A.M. "Sallie" Stewart who married John Wesley Alexander
- Martha C. "Mattie" Stewart who was the second wife James Presley Mozingo, Sr.
- Mary J. Stewart who married George C. Kelley
- Lucius "Lushe" Stewart who first married Mary Susan Oates then Amanda Alexander
- Israel Pinckney "Pinck" Stewart married Jane (nee?)
- Charles Willoby Stewart married Margaret Ellen Beasley
- Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Stewart was married to Washington "Wash" Reddick
- Perniece "Neesie" Stewart married Ira Pinckney "Pinck" Register
- Alexander Stewart
and
- Samuel Stewart

Only two children are listed on the Memorials of Abel and Lydia, mostly because the burial locations of the others have been difficult to locate.

A note: After noting that Wesley Chapel is listed on the cemetery's front page in church's site as being located in Lamar, I found out from multiple sources that Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and its cemetery are only served by the Lamar Post Office, but the church's actual location is Lydia.

Inscription

For those who may think the displayed grave marker is an actual physical marker, it is not. It does contain credible information, yet was "manufactured" on an Internet site where one just fills in dates, etc. While it is novel, and appreciated, it's important that one understands the picture of the marker is fictional.
