Archibald was the fifth child and fourth son born to Charles Stewart Miller and Mary McGowan Miller. He came with his parents and siblings to America in 1848. They landed in New Orleans, then traveled by riverboat up the Mississippi to St. Louis. The Miller family found work in the "coal diggings" at Gravois, just outside of the city. Tragically, a large cholera epidemic struck the area in the summer of 1849, and Archibald died at age 15, along with his parents and his older brother William, 17.
