James was the firstborn of eleven children to parents John Howard Farrar and Elizabeth Roland Harris. His first marriage was to Rebecca Floyd, his second to Sarah Jane Parker. James Farrar died on 16 March 1904 in Flat Creek TN.

James was born Oct 4th 1819 in North Carolina. He enlisted as a private on Nov 26, 1861 at Camp Trousdale, Tennessee in the 41st, Tennessee Infantry Regiment, Company K, Confederate States Army, and was forty years old at enlistment. James had medical problems and applied for discharge as a non-conscript on Dec. 1, 1862 and was discharged on March 18th 1863 at Port Hudson, Louisiana. He lived in Flat Creek, Tennessee before and after the war. He built a house there in 1840 that still stands. His great great-grandson Ike still lives in the house.
